High speed pursuit crash kills two from Crane

Monett man arrested on multiple felony charges
The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that killed two people in Monett Friday night.
According to the report, at approximately 10:13 p.m. on Friday, June 23, deputies from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office were pursuing a white 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 northbound on Missouri Highway 37, as they suspected the driver was impaired. The pursuit began around Pierce City and Lawrence County deputies alerted other agencies saying the pursuit was reaching speeds up to 100 mph on county roads.
As the pursuit approached the intersection of Missouri Highway 37 and U.S. Highway 60 the driver of the pickup ran a red light and t-boned a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, driven by Larry A. Brock, 53 of Crane. The high-speed impact sent Brock’s vehicle over a bridge and into a dry creek bed, instantly killing both Brock and his passenger, Lydia E. Shorey, 61, also of Crane. Neither were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Thomas Towing. Barry County E911alerted Monett Fire Dept. and Barry Lawrence EMS, Missouri Sate Highway patrol and other agencies to assist at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Rafael Contreras-Maldonado, 19, of Monett was not injured in the crash and was arrested and charged with felony DWI involving the death of two or more persons; felony possession of controlled substance-cocaine; felony resisting arrest; careless and imprudent driving resulting in an accident; no valid plates; no insurance; texting while driving; and no seat belt.   He is being held in the Barry County Jail without bond.This is Troop D’s 62nd and 63rd fatality for 2023.
