It was a slow week in Miller athletics as the boys got a week to savor the miraculous overtime win in the Miller tournament championship with a week without games, and the girls looked as dominant as ever defeating Sarcoxie and moving to 1-0 in conference play.
Miller jumped out early as sophomores Loghann Leivan and Ashlynn Helton led the Lady Cardinals to a 16-6 lead after one quarter. Miller improved on the quick start and ran the score up to a lopsided 41-15 lead at the break. The Lady Cardinals put it on the Lady Bears as seven players scored in Miller’s 64-30 win over Sarcoxie.
Helton led the way for the Lady Cardinals with a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 boards. She really filled up the stat sheet, also totaling six assists and six steals. Leivan followed in scoring output with 15 points. Junior Kendall Neely scored 10 points followed by a few new faces. Kaylee Thom scored six followed by sophomore Lainee Weiss with five. Alexis Bailey put up three points and Rachel Nunez finished with two points but grabbed seven boards.
Miller improves to 10-5 on the season as they are set to return to the court Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. after earning the three seed in the Stockton Tournament where they will take on a very tough Lamar squad. A win will likely set up a revenge game Thursday at 8:45 p.m. against Chadwick, but a loss will have them play Thursday at 5:45 p.m. They will wrap up tournament play Saturday.
