Lady Mt’neers fall to top ranked Skyline in state semifinals
The 2026 season has come to an end for the Class 2, second ranked Mt. Vernon High School softball team after they defeated Thayer 16-1 in Springfield, on Monday, May 25 in the third-place game for Class 2.
The Lady Mt’neers scored first and often in the third-place game, as Lilly Burk singled Hailey Stewart in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead, but they were not done yet. Emily Schuberet would drive in Burk on a fielder’s choice, Jocelyn Liss would triple in Schubert, Elli Eddington would single in Liss, AJ Shipman would drive in Eddington on a fielder’s choice, Hailey Stewart was hit by a pitch to drive in Lisa Stewart and Schubert would drive in Shipman on an error. When it was said and done, the Lady Mt’neers led 7-0 when the top of the first inning was over.
Mt. Vernon would score three runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings to lead 16-0 before Thayer finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Liss went 3-4 with a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs, Hailey Stewart was 2-2 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI and Shipman finished the game 0-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Schubert got the win, going four innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
The Lady Mt’neers opened the day with a 1-0 loss to the Class 2, top ranked Skyline Lady Tigers in the semifinals of the Class 2, state tournament.
Skyline scored the lone run of the game in the top of the third inning on a single to rightfield.
Eddington was 1-2 in the game with a double and Schubert took the loss, going seven innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
The Lady Mt’neers end their season at 30-6 but will have the majority of their team returning next year.
