Lady Mt’neers knock off Clever to advance to final four, Mt. Vernon baseball falls in districts to Springfield Catholic

The Class 2, second ranked Lady Mt’neers softball team continue to impress as they knocked off Clever 3-0 in the Class 2 quarterfinals in Mt. Vernon on Tuesday, May 19.

In the bottom of the first inning, Emily Schubert singled to left field to drive in Hailey Stewart and give Mt. Vernon an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Stewart flew out to center field, but Mary Fields was able to tag up and score on the play. Mt. Vernon scored their final run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Fields singled to center field to drive in Lisa Stewart.

Fields was 2-2 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI, Stewart went 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI, Schubert finished the game 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Schubert was also the winning pitcher, going seven innings, allowing no runs on one hit with four walks and 13 strikeouts.

The Lady Mt’neers are 29-5 on the season and have two games left in the season as they were scheduled to play against Class 2, top ranked Skyline in Springfield on Monday in a semifinal matchup. The winner of this game was scheduled to play against the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Class 2, sixth ranked Kennett and Thayer last night. The third place game of the state tournament was scheduled to be played on Monday night.

Baseball

The Mt. Vernon High School baseball team saw their 2026 season come to an end after losing to Springfield Catholic, 10-0 in the semifinals of the Class 4, District 10 tournament in Ozark on Monday, May 18.

The Fightin’ Irish scored four runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, three runs in the third inning and a single run in the sixth inning.

Cash Garner, Jax Evans, Zerrik Pham and Brody Wilmoth all were 1-3 and Aaden Tennison finished the game 1-2.

The Mt’neers finish the season with a 14-15 record.
