The Lady Mt’neers had a pair of battles last week against two solid competitors in the Big 8. They hosted Lamar for their Senior Night before falling to Cassville, Thursday night.
Play began Tuesday for a Senior Night celebration that honored a big senior class. Taylor Gaddy, Isabel Cloud, Audrey Bittle, Aubree Rogerson, Madison Rinker, Teagyn Huver, Cheyenne Bieber, and manager Ava Bellis were recognized ahead of the game before Mt. Vernon continued the party.
A huge first quarter that saw the Lady Mt’neers score 20 points by six players put the Lady Mt’neers up 20-13 after one quarter. Both offenses slowed down in the second, but six points from Bieber allowed the Lady Mt’neers to go into the half leading 30-24.
Mt. Vernon used stingy defense to squeeze the life out of Lamar in the second half, only allowing 12 points in the final two frames. The elite second half defense combined as 57 points scored by 10 Lady Mt’neers let Mt. Vernon cruise to a 57-36 Senior Night victory.
Bieber led the scoring for the game with 20 points followed by eight from Emmie Schubert. Aubree Rogerson had seven and Mary Fields had six. Teagyn Huver chipped in four. Isabel Cloud and Jocelyn Liss had three and the trio of Kenley Eidemiller, Madison Rinker and Audrey Bittle wrapped up scoring with two points each. Bieber also accounted for double digit assists as she collected a double-double in her final game on her home court.
Thursday night was not as kind to the Lady Mt’neers as they traveled to Cassville. The Lady Mt’neers had a tough time holding onto the ball as turnovers haunted the Mt. Vernon offense all night long. The Lady Mt’neers were held to single digits in three of the four quarters as the 18-5 Lady Wildcats dominated Thursday night 55-29.
Scoring for Mt. Vernon was led by Bieber with 12 points followed by Schubert with 10. Fields chipped in four and Bittle hit a three in the fourth quarter for her scoring output. Rinker and Huver each hit one free throw to wrap up the scoring.
The Lady Mt’neers move to 9-12 for the season as the year winds down. They had just one game, Monday night in Seneca this week. They will return to the court next Thursday in Clever to conclude the regular season.
