With the expansion of the Big 8 Conference from eight teams to 14, two divisions were created, an East and a West. At the conclusion of most sports, the two divisions are scheduled to match up with the same seed from the other division for a showdown contest. Volleyball is the first to show how it is done, as Mt. Vernon, finishing in fourth place in the Big 8 Conference East matched up with its counterpart in the West division, the Cassville Lady Wildcats on Thursday, Oct. 18, at Mt. Vernon.
The Lady Mt'neers defeated Cassville in two sets, 25-13 and 25-17, which also served as senior night for three Mt. Vernon athletes, Madysen Barber, Ashlyn McCanless and Maddy Mosley.
Mt. Vernon was led by sophomore Ellie Johnston, who notched eight kills, two aces and six digs. Lacy Stokes added five kills and Mosley had four kills.
Mt. Vernon will play in the Class 3 District 12 tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 24, opening as the top seed. They will play the winner of Reeds Spring and Cassville at 5 p.m. and with a win will advance to the district championship the same night at 8 p.m.
