Miller Cardinals remain perfect in Southwest Conference basketball action
Miller improved to 3-0 in conference play after a pair of thrilling road wins last week against Pierce City and Diamond.
The week started on Tuesday as the Cardinals went up the road in a rivalry game against the Pierce City Eagles. The two teams battled in a classic SWC clash. After trailing for the majority of the game, Owen Weiss brought the Cardinals back and forced overtime. Miller played well in the overtime period to improve to 2-0 in conference with a 61-57 victory to go along with a 45-42 win over Sarcoxie back in December.
The Cardinals were back in action Friday night when they traveled to 3-15 Diamond but the Cardinals got their best shot. Despite a tight game to the end, the Cardinals held on for the thrilling 48-46 victory and claimed their third SWC win of the season.
“The guys showed a ton of grit tonight especially in the fourth quarter,” Miller coach Brandon Weiss said following the win. “We were down for most of the game trying to fight back and then we hit a couple threes and started chipping away the eight points we were down at one point. We are finding ways to win games. It may not be the prettiest but at least we are finding a way.”
Weiss led the game with 28 points. Brodie Rinker and Paul Nunez each had six while Colton Brown and Nate Hill had four.
Miller will have perhaps their toughest week of the year that started with games against 13-5 Pleasant Hope, Monday and possibly the conference favorites Ash Grove on the road Tuesday. They will wrap up the week Friday with homecoming against Lockwood.
