An Oklahoma man working with a contracted crew from Oklahoma fell to his death off the Monett water tower adjacent to the IOOF Cemetery on March 1.
Steven “Cody” Carlson, 30, of Grove, Okla., was part of a crew from Eagle Sandblasting and Painting, subcontracted by Utility Services to paint the interior of the tower at 1569 Fourth Street. The incident took place around 9 a.m.
According to Lawrence County Coroner Scott Lakin, Carlson fell 128 feet. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) is investigating the incident. Lakin ordered an autopsy, which is being conducted by Southwest Missouri Forensics in Ozark.
“Monett firefighters and the Barry-Lawrence Ambulance Service personnel attempted life-saving care at the scene, but [Carlson] was pronounced deceased at 9:19 a.m.,” according to a statement issued by the city.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Lakin Funeral Home of Pierce City. Lakin said the victim’s brother had a family member that used to work for the funeral home. According to the victim’s father, Carlson had climbed 1,600-foot cell towers without any problems.
A celebration of life was planned at the Butler Baptist Church in Jay, Okla., on May 9.
