Mt’neers win 2024 Bell Bowl
Team retains Bell Bowl trophy for another year with victory over Aurora
The Mt. Vernon Mt’neers began their 2024 season with a narrow victory over the Aurora Houn’ Dawgs at Mt’neer Stadium on Friday, Aug. 30. The Mt’neers defeated the Houn’ Dawg’s by one point, ensuring that they would retain possession of the coveted Bell Bowl trophy for another year.
The game began with the Houn’ Dawgs kicking off to the Mt’neers. The Houn’ Dawgs then quickly intercepted the ball, but the Mt’neers forced a turnover on downs to go back on offense. Near the end of the first quarter, they advanced to Aurora’s three-yard line. Braden Dodson then made the plunge into the end zone, allowing the Mt’neers to score the first touchdown of the game. A successful PAT followed, making the score 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Houn’ Dawgs scored their own near the end of third quarter. They attempted to pull ahead with a two-point conversion, but the Mt’neers blocked the attempt. With neither team making another touchdown for the rest of the night, the game ended a Mt’neer victory with a score of 7-6.
