Mt’neers win final warm-up before Stockton tourney
The Mt. Vernon Mt’neers returned to the court after the new year a couple weeks ago, but a tough matchup with Lamar saw the Mt’neers fall in their first game of 2024. They reversed the trend with a tight 56-54 victory over the Spokane Owls ahead of the Stockton Tournament.
After a busy holiday break, the schedule slowed down for the Mt’neers with just a one-game week against Spokane. The Mt’neers and the Owls went back and forth all night long but it was Jarrett Zerby and Juliun Hernandez along with the rest of the Mt’neers that got the last laugh as Mt. Vernon defeated the Owls 56-54.
The win moves Mt. Vernon to 6-4 for the season. Mt. Vernon will have a chance to really make a statement this week at one of the fastest growing, mid-sized tournaments in southwest Missouri in Stockton. They received the fourth seed and are scheduled to take on Lockwood, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. A win would put them back in action Friday at 6:30 p.m. against El Dorado Springs. A loss to the Tigers will see the Mt’neers back in action in the consolation championship game Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Lady Mt’neer basketballers earn Big 8 win in week split

The Mt. Vernon Lady Mt’neers returned to the court last week to take on a pair of familiar foes in Seneca and Clever.
The week began Monday night when Big 8 rival Seneca came to town to do battle with the Lady Mt’neers. Mt. Vernon had everything working for them on both sides of the ball as they cruised to a 58-20 victory over the Lady Indians. Thursday presented a bigger challenge as the Clever Lady Jays came to town as one of the toughest games on Mt. Vernon’s schedule all season long. The Lady Jays made life miserable for the ball handlers of the Lady Mt’neers and forced Mt. Vernon into double digit turnovers as Clever cruised to a 68-37 win.
The Lady Mt’neers improve to 6-7 for the year with another big week upcoming. They will compete in the girls side of the Stockton Tournament where they received the five seed and will take on Marion C. Early Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. A win would advance them to the semifinal game Thursday at 7:15 p.m. but a loss will pit them at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
