Mt’neers win streak halted at 8, but pick up three more wins

Mt. Vernon seeded fourth in Class 4, District 10 Tournament set to begin Friday, May 16, in Strafford
The Mt. Vernon High School baseball team went 3-1 last week, to bring their season win total to 12.
On Friday, May 9, The Mt’neers hosted Marionville and defeated the Comets 10-2.
Marionville scored two runs in the top of the first inning and then were shut down the rest of the way. Mt. Vernon answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, one run in the third inning, four runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning to wrap up the scoring.
On Thursday, May 8, Mt. Vernon traveled to Hollister and came home with a 3-2 loss, putting an end to their eight-game winning streak.
Mt. Vernon traveled to East Newton on Tuesday, May 6, and won the game 8-2.
Jaxen Evans was 2-4 with three RBI’s in the game and Gavin Johnston and Brayden Jameson both had two hits. Braden Dodson was the winning pitcher, going seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
“Our guys had an impressive win over a good East Newton baseball team,” said head coach Kyler Shoff. “I am super proud of the way they played. We are playing good baseball right now which is what you want going into districts.”
The Mt’neers opened the week by hosting and beating Buffalo, 1-0, on Monday, May 5. Jameson got the win, going five-and-a-third innings, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
“We struggled at the plate against Buffalo but our defense and pitching was phenomenal,” said Shoff. “Jameson threw a great game for us on the mound, and our guys played good defense behind him.”
Mt. Vernon is now 12-11 on the season and were scheduled to play against Lamar on Monday night before traveling to Purdy to end the regular season last night. Mt. Vernon was scheduled to open up Class 4, District 10 against Buffalo in Strafford on Friday night.
Strafford is the top seed in the Class 4, District 10 Tournament followed by Nevada, Clinton, Mt. Vernon and Buffalo. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday with the semifinals being played on May 19 and the championship game happening on May 20.
