Mt. Vernon’s Horton signs to play football at MSSU
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, Mt. Vernon High School senior Braxton Horton signed his national letter of intent to continue his academic and football career at Missouri Southern State University.
Horton played for three years on the Mt. Vernon varsity football team. He saw some action on the varsity as a sophomore and as a junior and senior he was starter at wide receiver and tight end. As a junior he had 20 catches for 263 years (13.25 yd. avg.) and had four touchdowns. As a senior he caught 26 passes for 322 yards (12.38 yd. avg.) and had five touchdowns. He earned all-conference, all-district and all-area honors during his junior and senior seasons. Along with football, he also played on the Mt. Vernon basketball and baseball teams.
“I’m super proud of Braxton” said Mt. Vernon head football coach Tom Cox. “I look forward to watching him play for Coach Atiba Bradley and the Missouri Southern Lions. Braxton has worked really hard to become a very good football player. With his size and speed, the sky is the limit.“
Horton will be playing on the Southwest 7’s which is a 7 on 7 football team which travels all over the United States competing in tournaments. He said he plans to get his degree in business administration.
“I’m very blessed to have this opportunity” said Horton. “It has been a long time coming and has been an uphill battle the entire time but I’m ready to get back in the end zone again.”
