Mt. Vernon Board of Education adds new member Scrivner
At the Mt. Vernon Board of Education meeting June 22, the members of the board were quite busy discussing a new addition to their team and reconsidering the contracts of some of the staff.
The members of the board accepted new member Stacie Scrivner following a majority vote. Scrivner was chosen from a list of potential candidates who volunteered for the position.
"The Mount Vernon Board of Education is extremely grateful for those who stepped forward to be considered for this position. Membership on the board of education is an act of service to the families of our community and these patrons are to be admired for their willingness to sacrifice their time," said Superintendent Scott Cook in a report.
Scrivner will hold office until 2024. She was chosen following the resignation of longtime member John Rutledge. Scrivner currently holds a position at the Joplin campus at Kansas City University.
Cook voiced his and the board's excitement to have Scrivner aboard.
"We are excited to welcome Stacie to the board and look forward to adding her perspective to the board," Cook said.

- The board voted unanimously to add another member to the track team's coaching staff. In their previous arrangement, the track team had three total coaches, one for the boys team, one for the girls team, and one assistant. The new layout will see the team having one head coach overall, and three separate assistants to be allocated wherever needed.
- The board also approved a bump in the base salary of professional staff to keep up with the changing times. The move will increase the salary by $1,500 which will make the base pay $35,000. This was made possible by the school joining a new health insurance consortium which freed up additional revenue. They also scraped together more spare cash thanks to this year's property tax reassessment.
"Although state funding is expected to remain flat for the upcoming year, local revenue did increase for the second consecutive year." said Cook.
