Mt. Vernon KFC kicks the bucket, future uncertain

After decades in business, the Mt. Vernon KFC restaurant, in joint operation with Long John Silver’s at 1101 East Mt. Vernon Boulevard, has permanently closed its doors. The last day open for the long-held franchise was Monday, March 17. Employees who were still on site Tuesday, March 18, said they were offered a transfer of employment to a Springfield location, if interested. No report yet of how many of the dozen or so employees made the transfer. The reason for the closure, per the workers, was that the lease on the building was not offered for renewal by the building owners.
The future of the building remains unclear. According to the county assessor’s map, the building is owned by the Tryon and Delores Sisson Trust.
