Several 4-H club members across Lawrence County joined together on Dec. 16, 2023 at Springfield National Cemetery to help place 7,600 wreaths on the headstones for Wreaths for Warriors.

On Dec. 16, several 4-H clubs members across Lawrence County joined forces with the Southwest Research and Education Center in Mt. Vernon and spent their day placing 7,600 wreaths on the headstones of fallen soldiers at the Springfield National Cemetery, up from 1,800 last year. This year they worked year round to raise funds from bake sales, cornhole tournaments and some of the kids wrote grants. They were also on radio and television and had billboards which gained the attention and support of several local businesses to make it all possible.
Each December on National Wreaths for Warriors Day, the mission is to remember, honor and teach by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 3,700 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. These groups help ensure that Wreaths for Warriors reaches their goal to place a wreath on each hero’s grave. In return, the participating organizations receive fund raising dollars that assist in furthering their own goals and projects.
