Frederick Maurice George

Frederick Maurice George passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2019, after a short battle with cancer, at the Lawrence County Manor in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. Fred was born January 7, 1949, in Kirksville, Missouri, the son of Harold E. George and Mardell K. (Steggall) George. Fred grew up in Mt. Vernon, where he graduated from high school in 1967. He was drafted into the Army in 1969 and received an honorable discharge in 1971. He continued his education at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri and later in Kansas City, Missouri, majoring in accounting.
Fred was an avid reader, especially of history. He loved to read anything he could find on the Civil War. While residing in Kansas City, he became a member of the Civil War Roundtable. He resided in Kansas City for over forty years, until falling ill and moved to the Lawrence County Manor in 2009, to be close to his family.
Fred leaves behind a daughter, Catherine Denise (Phil) Nelson of Baldwin, Missouri; two brothers, Scott (Charlotte) George of Mt. Vernon and Robert (Sherrie) George of Aurora, Missouri; four sisters, Susan Stark of Mt. Vernon, Mary Catron of Walnut Grove, Missouri, Carol (Ken) McIntyre of Lockwood, Missouri and Jane (Carl) Claas of Mt. Vernon and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Fred’s parents, Harold E. George, D.O. and Betty M. (Doss) George and Duane D. Kirby and Mardell Kirby, preceded him in death.
A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A private family service and internment will be held at the Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri.
Because Fred loved cats, the family request donations be made payable to the Humane Society in Springfield or Joplin, Missouri, in care of the funeral home.
