Lady Mt’neers fall to Hillcrest

The Lady Mt’neers basketball team started their 2025-26 season by traveling to Springfield to take on the Lady Hornets and fell to Hillcrest 71-29.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 23-8 first quarter lead and added another 25 points in the second quarter to increase the lead to 48-9 at the half. A 20-point third quarter increased Hillcrest’s lead to 68-23. Mt. Vernon outscored Hillcrest 6-3 in the final quarter of play.
Emmie Schubert led Mt. Vernon with 11 points, and four rebounds and Elli Eddington added eight points and three rebounds.
“This game was a tough one, no question, but our mindset is centered on growth,” said head coach Alexis Cauthon. “We’re building every day, and our “sisterhood’ is the foundation that keeps us steady through challenges like this. We faced a championship-caliber team, and we’ll use the experience to fuel our improvement moving forward.”
Mt. Vernon is 0-1 on the season and were scheduled to play at the Fair Grove Invitational this Monday through Friday.

Boys’ basketball
The Mt’neers basketball team has yet to play a game but were scheduled to play at the 92nd Annual Clever Boys Invitational  this Monday through Saturday.
