Beverly O’Neal Swearingin

Beverly O’Neal Swearingin, 71, passed away Nov. 7, 2020, in her home after a brave battle with cancer. She was born June 5, 1949 Master Sergeant C.L. “Bus” and Virginia O’Neal in Springfield where she spent her childhood.
She was a member of the Parkview Class of 1969. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from University of West Florida and went on to receive a Master of Education degree from Drury University. She was employed by Mt. Vernon School District from 1984 to 1992 where she taught special education and became Director of Special Services. She went on to work for the family business until retirement.
As a founding member of Emergency Services for Children in Mt. Vernon, she was board chairperson at the time of her passing. By serving the least of God’s children, she was recognized as Mt. Vernon Citizen of the Year in 2016 and chosen as an American Red Cross/KY3TV Everyday Hero in 2016.
In 1985, Beverly was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer and was given little hope of long-term survival.
She is survived by her husband, Wilbur Swearingin of the home; daughter, Amy (Ashley) Gilbert; two grandchildren; daughter, Amy Renee and husband Todd VanGorden; daughter, Susan (Dejan) Dimitrijevic; one grandson; and many other relatives. Swearingin was preceded in death by her parents; son, David Deckard and daughter Glenda Messersmith.
As a longtime member of Mt. Vernon Church of Christ, she  faithfully served in benevolence and most church activities.
A visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.  A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020, at the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ.  Burial will follow at the White Chapel Cemetery in Springfield. Due to COVID 19, the family has requested for those attending the services to wear a mask and to practice social distancing. Memorials may be made to the Emergency Services for Children.
