Byron “Jim” Eugene Poynter

On Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 2:30 p.m., Byron “Jim” Poynter passed away at Saint Anthonys Hospital in Rockford, Illinois, at the age of 68.
Byron was born on August 10, 1950, in Lynwood California to Ssgt. James I Poynter and Kathern (Morrow) Poynter. He joined the Marine Corp in 1967, and served until 1971. He was active in the Reserves for several years after. Byron was very passionate about his time in the Marine Corps and was honored to serve his country and to follow in his fathers footsteps. Byron was a long haul truck driver until 2011. He had a love for cooking as well. He was famous in the family for his sweet and sour chicken and fried rice.
Byron loved his family more than anything. He loved driving a semi so he could travel all over the United States to visit his family and make memories with them. Byron was beyond proud of his kids and grandkids.
Byron was preceded in death by: his parents, James and Kathern; one sister, Sharon Jones; and his baby brother, Danny Miller. He is survived by his four children and 12 grandchildren: Jesse Poynter of Monett, Mo. and his four children, Kori, Trinity, Konner and Sidnee. Trish Gatewood, of Stotts City and her husband William along with their three children, Addie, Jasmine and Reigan. Melissa Rutledge of Joplin and her husband Clark, their three children, Kate, Annabelle, and Juliette. Jason Poynter of Joplin and his wife Sasha, with their two children, Harper and Carson. His sister Pattie Harter of Hewitt, New Jersey. Sister Lois Reasor of Kingsport, Tennessee, and his brother Steven Miller, of Bodfish California. Along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Byron had a large family.
A celebration of life will be held in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Veterans Home where Byron once lived on October 27, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to the Mt. Vernon Veterans home in Byrons Honor.
