Dr. Luis A. Hinojosa

Dr. Luis A. Hinojosa M.D. passed away peacefully along side his four sons on September 16, 2021 at the University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
Doc, as he was affectionately named by several people in his hometown of Mount Vernon, Missouri, loved living in the small community.  He gave credit for the success of his four sons to living in MV and to the friendships made there.  There were others who referred to Dr. Hinojosa as “Pop”, even if they were not related to him.  Pop was the nickname his boys called him all of their lives and their friends also called him that.
Pop was born in La Paz, Bolivia to Emilio and Dora Hinojosa on August 18, 1944.  He had two siblings, Walter and Miriam Hinojosa.  He graduated from the University of San Andres School of Medicine in Bolivia. He was an associate professor of biochemistry at the School of Medicine.  He lived in Rochester, New York as he completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital through the University of Rochester School of Medicine. At the Medical University of South Carolina, he completed his fellowship training in endocrinology and metabolism, as well as a fellowship in pulmonary medicine.  He moved to Mount Vernon, Missouri to work at the Missouri State Chest Hospital and eventually opened his own practice that he held for over 30 years. He retired in 2018 and then came out of retirement to work at the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital in 2021.
Doc married Patricia Collazos in 1973 and had their first child, Luis Patrick, and then had Luis Paul.  Pop later married Leann Peck and had Grayson and Andrew.
Pop is survived by his four sons, Luis Patrick (Meghan), Luis Paul, Grayson (Katie), and Andrew. He also had 5 grandchildren, Sam, Tanner, Anna, Beckett, and Scarlett. Brother, Walter Hinojosa and his children Andrea, Walter and Camila. Sister, Miriam, and her 2 children, Huascar and Gonzalo. Cousin Pete Mitchell. Cousin Vinny Gambini (Mona Lisa),  BFFs Hank Mardukas, Sally Albright and Melanie Smooter. 2nd cousins Ruth Langmore, Jack Walsh and Jonathan Mardukas. Panera Bread Ladies (Campbell St).  He was preceded in death by his parents Emilio and Dora Hinojosa.
Memorial services will be held at the Mount Vernon First Presbyterian Church on June 25th, 2022 in Mount Vernon, Missouri.  1:00pm Visitation. 2:00pm Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Mount Vernon High School tennis teams in memory of Dr. Hinojosa.  Checks can be mailed directly to the MVHS Tennis program.
