George R. Bierkortte

George R. Bierkortte, 98, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, passed away at Oak Pointe Senior Living Center Community in Monett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha E. Bierkortte in 2016. He is survived by son, Jay Bierkortte, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter and sister, Clara Mae DiClemente. Born in Wheeling, W. Va. and residing until recently in Fountain Valley, Calif., he was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. A long-time member of the Knights of Columbus there, he founded and led the Singing Knights for that Council.
He was also a 20-year member of the R.S.V.P. group working with the Fountain Valley Police Department. He served in the Eastern Theater during World War II, and was called back into service for the Korean Conflict, and ended his career during the first years of the Vietnam War. In the course of a 20-year career he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Legion of Merit. He retired in 1967 and made a second career as General Manager of the Salman Furniture Corporation in Long Beach. George and Martha will be inured in the Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery in Springfield.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home in Monett.
