George Richard Gurley
George Richard Gurley, 77, of Sarcoxie, passed away Nov. 14, 2020 in the comfort of his own home.
He was born on Jan. 11, 1943 in Carthage to the union of the late Richard L. and Betty J. (Marrett) Gurley. He was a graduate of Sarcoxie High School. On Jan. 26, 1964 he was united in marriage to Margaret Ruth Bachtold. Together they shared 56 years. He proudly served in the United States Army. During his service he received several commendations including: Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooters Badge (Rifle) and the National Defense Service Medal. Prior to entering the service he was employed with Menefee Construction Co. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to Menefee Construction, and worked as their Project Manager for a total employment of 33 years. He then worked for Americold Logistics, retiring after 11 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Richard and Rayma Gurley; mother, Betty Jo Marrett and his sister, Elizabeth Kistler.
He is survived by his wife; children, Gina (Jason) Revel of Leawood, Kansas, Erik (Lisa) Gurley of Bentonville, Ark. and Jared Gurley of Sarcoxie; three grandchildren; sister, Nancy Williamson of Dallas, Tex.; brother-in-law’s, Dale Bachtold of Sarcoxie and Roger Kistler of Dallas, Tex.; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Memorial services with military honors were held Nov. 28, 2020 at Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home. Visitation was prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the Carthage or Joplin Humane Society in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home in Sarcoxie.
