Herold George

Harold “Jack” George, 100, of Pierce City. passed away on Monday, Aug. 16 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon. George was born on July 8, 1921, to Harold Holden and Ruth Faye Wright George in Ames, Iowa. He married Joanne Moore on December 28, 1947, at the First Congregational Church in Pierce City. Joanne preceded him in death on Dec. 13, 2011.
George is survived by his four children: Janene Kipers (Gary), Jim George (Betty), Julie Garner (Bryce), of Pierce City, John George (Ramona) of Rogersville; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife Joanne, George was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Jenny Garner.
Jack’s family spent his early years in Pierce City, California, and Texas until he was in fourth grade. The family then moved back to Pierce City, and he lived there until he graduated from Pierce City High School. He attended one year at Monett Junior College.
George was a proud veteran of the United States Army. George joined the Pierce City National Guard in 1938 at the age of 16. He was called to WW II active duty in Sept., 1940, where he went to Camp Hulen. He was a Private First Class at this time but was promoted to Corporal while there. After WW II, George was in the Active Reserve, Inactive Reserve, and the Retired Reserve. George was in the service for about 45 years, and he reached the rank of Captain.
After discharge, George attended school at the University of Missouri in Columbia. They got married at the First Congregational Church in Pierce City in 1947 while still attending school, and lived in Columbia until they decided to move back to Pierce City and take over the family business due to George’s father’s failing health. They were happily married for almost 64 years.
George owned and operated George Produce/Purina Chows, raised turkeys, and built and operated Ag Service Center feed and fertilizer business for many years. He was always involved in many organizations including Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, and the American Legion. He served time on the school board, library board, museum board, cemetery board, and he loved being a member of the First Congregational Church in Pierce City, where he proudly sang in the choir since his youth.
Friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27, 2021, at Lakin Funeral Home, Pierce City.
Military graveside service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, at the Pierce City Cemetery in Pierce City, with Dr. James Adams and Jack Goodman officiating.
Memorials can be made to the First Congregational Church in Pierce City in care of the funeral home.
