JoAnn Hankins

JoAnn Hankins, 80, of Monett, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2026, while at Lacoba Nursing Home in Monett.  
She was born on Sep. 11, 1945, in Aurora, daughter of Roy and Lacy Mae (Elkins) Phelps.  
She believed that helping others was its own reward—never seeking recognition or applause for the countless acts of kindness she performed throughout her life. 
Her greatest adventures were often shared with her sister, Maxine, and her cousin, Fern. The three were inseparable friends who spent years laughing and making cherished memories together. 
On July 9, 1966, Carolyn JoAnn Phelps married Max G. Hankins. They enjoyed forty-one years together before his passing on May 12, 2008. 
Survivors include two sons, Rick Hankins of Glendale, Calif. and Mike Hankins and wife Kristi of Lehi, Utah; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Pearson of Springfield. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Jewell Lynn Phelps and Sue Marrs; two brothers, Joe Phelps and Wayne Phelps. 
Memorial visitation for Mrs. Hankins will be held at a later date, to be announced.  Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett.
