John Robert Painter

John Robert “Bob” Painter, 81, of Monett, passed from this life on Tuesday evening, Feb. 1, 2022, while at his home.
Painter was born on Dec. 21, 1940 in rural Barry County, son of the late Carl Morris Painter and Leona Esther (Laney) Painter. He attended grade school in Washburn and eighth grade in Shawnee, Kan., graduating from Wheaton High School with the class of 1958. In November of that same year, he enlisted in the United States Navy in Kansas City. He was sent to the USNTC in Great Lakes, Ill. for bootcamp. Painter completed two tours on the U.S.S. Henrico in the Orient. During his tours, he worked as an Engineman. He was honorably discharged at Treasure Island, San Francisco in December of 1961.
Painter had worked for Jumping Jacks, EFCO and ultimately retired from Schreiber in Mt. Vernon in 2001 where he had worked in maintenance.
Painter was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Monett, where he had attended since 1976. He was also a member, current Commander for the last four years and 2019-2020 Legionnaire of the year of the American Legion Post #91. He thoroughly felt honored to be a member of the Honor Guard for the American Legion and the V.F.W.
On Nov. 12, 1976 in Monett, he married Mary Jane “Janie” Fleming. They had 45 years together.
Painter is survived by his wife Janie, of the home; two sons, Charles Painter (Pam) and Mark Painter (Barbie), all of Monett; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Carol Thomas (Marvin), of Washburn; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by one daughter in infancy, Lisa Painter; one brother, Morris Leon Painter; and one sister, Margaret Mutrux.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Monett with Reverend Andrew Kennell and Reverend James Schnackenburg officiating. Burial and military honors will be at the McCormick-St. John’s Cemetery in Monett. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions have been suggested to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to the American Legion Post #91 in care of the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett.
