Lady Mt’neers stay hot in home stretch

The Lady Mt’neers have been on a roll winning 15 of their last 17 games, including an active nine-game win streak. They traveled to Adrian to take on some of the best the entire state has to offer. But first, they traveled to Sarcoxie (12-7) on Monday.

Versus Sarcoxie
Errors haunted the Lady Mt’neers, especially in the bottom of the third inning when they gave up a leadoff home run and two singles. However, three straight errors with two outs led to four runs, giving Sarcoxie the advantage, 5-1. Zeros would get put up until the fifth inning when Mt. Vernon senior Hadley Cornell reached on a dropped third strike. Then Kylee Stockton, Molly Daniels and Payge Evans would all single in consecutive at bats to drive in a run.
Mt. Vernon got one more run across to cut the lead to 5-2. Mt. Vernon tied the game at 5 after Cornell drove in freshman Cheyenne Bieber. Two walks, and an error led to a fielder’s choice and a sac fly, and Sarcoxie ended the Lady Mt’neers 9-game win streak.

Adrian Tournament
Mt. Vernon looked for revenge Friday as they traveled up near Kansas City to play in the Adrian Tournament. Mt. Vernon capitalized early on an error from Wellington-Napoleon, as they struck first in the second inning, but more importantly, extended the inning that saw Molly Daniels drive in Cornell to go up 2-0. Allie Schubert highlighted the 5-0 win with a two-run double in the sixth. Harley Daniels was fantastic in the circle fanning 12, allowing just three hits in a complete game shutout to open the tournament.
Cheyenne Bieber struggled in the second game of the day against the top-ranked team in the state, Skyline. The Lady Tigers put up four runs in the first inning. Rae Downing, Bieber and Cornell opened the second inning with three straight singles to score the first run for the Lady Mt’neers. A passed ball plated Bieber and a fielder's choice brought in Cornell to cut the deficit, 4-3. However, Skyline would explode for 12 runs in the next three innings and the Lady Mt’neers fell to the Lady Tigers, 16-3.
The loss set up a third-place battle with Lone Jack. Mt. Vernon struck first in the third inning as Bieber drove in Downing with a 1-out single. Cornell and Molly Daniels both drove in a run, as well, in the inning giving the Mt’neers a 3-0 lead. A steady attack culminated in an RBI double by Josey McChesney in the fifth inning to extend the lead 7-0. Lone Jack made their surge with a pair of doubles that plated three in the sixth, but that wouldn’t be enough and Mt. Vernon took third in the Adrian Tournament with an 8-3 win.
The Lady Mt’neers move to 19-6 on the year heading into another busy week, as they traveled to Strafford (10-7), Monday. They hosted Pierce City (13-5) and Clever (12-8), Tuesday. Diamond (16-2) came to town Friday ahead of the Mt. Vernon Tournament, set to kick off Saturday.
