Marilyn Kay Mattas

Marilyn Kay Mattas, of Mt. Vernon, passed away June 29, 2020, from pancreatic cancer. She was born Jan. 31, 1940 in Wilson, Kan., to the late Edward and Mary (Krupp) Malir.
She married Richard Mattas June 6, 1964, in Wilson, Kan., and relocated to Mt. Vernon where they raised three children together. She spent 40 years as a registered nurse, most of it with the Lawrence County Health Department. She volunteered in her community throughout her retirement including the Veteran’s Home Rehabilitation Gift Shop, various St. Susanne’s Church events and Hospice. 
Mattas is survived by: her husband of 56 years, Richard Mattas; children, Susan (Danny) Burlison, Steve (Kelly) Mattas and Janet (Shannon) Andrews; five grandchildren; and brothers, Gene, and Ken Malir.
A funeral service under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon was held July 3, 2020, at the St. Susanne Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon. Rosary was held July 2, 2020 with visitation that followed at the church. Burial was at the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.
