Despite the summertime temps, chili was still the order of the day at the Mt. Vernon Community Betterment Council’s inaugural chili cook-off held at the MARC Saturday, Sept. 28. Twenty-one themed teams took part in the event, offering a wide variety of chilis from Alaskan chili to pumpkin chili. With all the votes counted, the winning chili came from Mt. Vernon First Christian Church’s team, Holy Smokes as announced by Judge Scott Sifferman.
The event was preceded by a talent show, and also included entertainment from the Mt. Vernon High School Improv Team. The cook-off concluded with a lively dessert auction presided over by Jason Lacey.
Organizer Marsha Jones was pleased with the first-time affair.
“We had a lot of great teams…There were maybe 150 people total. We were hoping we might have 200 but with the band competition and other things happening, and warmer temperatures; maybe next year it will be cold and everyone will feel like chili,” Jones said. “It went very smoothly and we’ll definitely do it again next year.”
