On March 13-15, the Mt. Vernon High School drama department staged their version of Robert Harling’s 1987 play Steel Magnolias. Steel Magnolias which was adapted for screenplay in 1989, is a moving story about the bond a group of women share in a small-town southern community, and how they cope with the death of one of their own. The center of the story centers around M’Lynn (played by Ayden Alexander) and her daughter Shelby (played by Eden Shelton), who suffers from type 1 diabetes. After having a child of her own, Shelby passes away due to type 1 diabetes complications. Harling based the story of his sister, Susan Harling Robinson, who died in 1985 from type 1 diabetes.  While the storyline is one of loss, it also showed a comedic view of how friends can deal with the pain of loss. Steel Magnolias has touched the hearts of many who viewed it for nearly four decades and the Mt. Vernon drama department didn’t fail to deliver a gut wrenching performance as well.
