The Mt. Vernon Economic Development Corporation took action in introducing Mt. Vernon high schoolers to local manufacturing. The organization hosted a manufacturing tour, Friday, Oct. 19, in honor of National Manufacturing Day, which occurs annually the first Friday in October.
The Mt. Vernon tour included stops at three Mt. Vernon manufacturers: Mid-America Dental and Hearing, Reyco-Granning and Cutting Edge Precision Machining.
“We had great success on our first Manufacturing Day with 28 Mt. Vernon students and two faculty joining EDC members to visit three of our local manufacturers,” said Earl Alexander, president of the Mt. Vernon EDC. “It was a great opportunity to introduce to our students these three manufacturers right here in our community. To see the expressions on the students faces knowing that there are great employment options right here in town, was exactly what we were hoping for.”
EDC’s Brian George, who gave the tour at his employer Mid-America, enjoyed enlightening the youth to opportunities in Mt. Vernon.
“It was a pleasure hosting the students at our facilities. I felt it was important for them to experience first hand how traditional hand-crafted manufacturing methods can blend together with modern CAD/CAM systems.”
Considering the success of the first time event, Alexander anticipates more tours in the future.
“We are sure this will become an annual event if not semi-annual,” said Alexander. “Great thanks to our school for putting the effort into getting the students to join us, and thanks to the three manufacturers who took time out of their production day to introduce the students to who they are and what they manufacture.”
