Mt. Vernon’s 2019 Red, White & BOOM Independence Day celebration will be held at the Spirit of ’76 Park on Friday, June 28. The event is free and open to the public.
The 17th annual Red, White & BOOM will begin with free swim at the city pool at 2 p.m. There will also be free laser tag, starting at 6 p.m.; at 6:45 p.m., the American flag will be presented and the Star-Spangled Banner will be played. Afterwards, there will be live music performed by Papa Green Shoes. Additionally, a concession stand will be selling hot dogs, chips, drinks, snacks, glow necklaces, glow stars and glow bracelets from 6:30-9 p.m., with proceeds going to fund future Red, White and BOOM events. The fireworks display begins at 9:30 p.m.
Free parking will be available at the Spirit of ’76 Park and the city square. Those with a disabled parking permit will be able to park at the Mt. Vernon Senior Center, and a shuttle will run between the senior center and the park from 5-8:30 p.m., and again after the fireworks begin.
Visitors who wish to stay for the fireworks are encouraged to come early and bring their chairs or blankets; the park is the best spot to view the fireworks. Picnic tables will also be set up in the tennis courts; they are recommended as a place to hold family or class reunions.
All guests are reminded that Red, White & BOOM is an alcohol-free event. Pets are also not allowed at the park during the event. If the event is rained-out, the make-up date is Saturday, June 29. For more information, contact City Hall (417) 466-2122 or Carol Millsap McIntyre (417) 316-0394.
