RICHARD DEAN PREWITT

Richard Dean Prewitt, age 94, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri passed away at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at his home. He was born April 1, 1931, in Oregon County, Missouri; the son of Julius Arthur and Ethel Truly (Mcllroy) Prewitt.
Richard was a 1948 graduate of Couch High School in Couch, Missouri. After high school he joined the Navy and served in Alaska as a Radiosonde Operator for two years. Richard received his master’s degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. He worked for the MU Extension Services as County Agent and later specialized as Lakes Area Agronomist. During his tenure he was influential in the use of fescue for cattle production. The farming community was important to Richard; as was his belief in Jesus. He was an active and faithful member of the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ. Richard served as a deacon for many years and went on mission trips to Central America with his wife, Della.
On November 6, 1952, he married Della Francis Jenkins in Salem, Arkansas. Richard was devoted to Della, and they were married for 72 years. She preceded him in death on February 20, 2025.
Richard is survived by two daughters, Mona Ingle and her husband, Jim of Monett, Missouri and Rena Reckewey of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two sons, Patrick Prewitt and his wife, Jayne of Mt. Vernon, Missouri and Mark Prewitt and his fiancée, Brenda Woods of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; two brothers-in-law, Larry Cockman and his wife, Sue of Poplar Bluff, Missouri and Gene Ingle of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; 13 grandchildren: Sarah (Eric) Johnson, Rebecca (Nathan) Schoen, Bethany (Justin) Patterson, Adam (Celia) Ingle, Emma (Lucas) Wallace, Julia Prewitt, Carrie Ingle, Leah (Steven) Prewitt all of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, Aaron (Ali) Ingle, of Monett, Missouri, Abbey (Alex) Shaw of Joplin, Missouri, Sloane Reckewey of Denver, Colorado, Marra Reckewey of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Jason (Amy) Ingle of Fort Myers, Florida; 17 great-grandchildren; niece, Sandy Brown and her husband, Jim of Aurora, Missouri and nephew, Barth Day and his wife, Debbie of Walnut Grove, Missouri.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Julius, and Ethel; son, Roger Prewitt; sister, Martha Day and her husband, Earl; sister-in-law, Carol Ingle and brother-in-law, Dow Jenkins and his wife, Marge.
A visitation was held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A funeral service were held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in the funeral home chapel. Burial followed at the Mt. Vernon IOOF Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to the Happy Hollow Bible Camp, in care of the funeral home.
