Ross J Cameron

Ross J Cameron, 73, passed away on Friday, June 3, 2022 in his home in Springfield, VA.  He was born on February 24, 1949 in Monett, MO, to Wilburn Triece and Bonnie Ruth (Patton) Cameron of Mount Vernon, MO, who preceded him in death.
Ross spent his childhood in Mount Vernon, MO where he was baptized on April 13, 1958 at First Baptist Church. He enjoyed school, basketball, and numerous extracurricular activities. While attending Mount Vernon High School, he was a Junior Rotarian (’65-‘67), served as secretary (‘65-’66) then president (‘66-’67) of the Student Council, and was a member (’64-‘65) then captain of the Tournament of Knowledge Team (’65-‘66). He also became the president of the Lawrence County Missouri Historical Society when he was only 17, serving in the position for 2 years, then continued contributing in various ways for the remainder of his life. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1967 as valedictorian and was a National Merit Scholar. In celebration, the mayor of Mount Vernon designated May 20, 1967 as “Ross J Cameron Day”, which involved a reception, a scholarship presentation ceremony, and a visit from the Lieutenant Governor.
After graduating from the University of Missouri-Rolla with degrees in Physics and History and the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Master’s degree and years of post-graduate work in History, Ross joined the National Archives in 1976 as an archivist. He conducted appraisals, accessionings, preservations, and references on the small, growing holdings of electronic records and became a pioneer in the field. He served on Federal Statistical Policy & Standards committees, published papers for the Society of American Archivists and the Southern Historical Association, and taught electronic records classes. He played a key role in the preservation of White House records for the Armstrong v. Executive Office of the President case. He mentored generations of electronic records archivists, technicians, and IT specialists and was a resource for agency staff on electronic records policy and procedures. He retired in January 2018.
Ross was active in church and served in many ministries and positions, including Sunday School, AWANA, the Deacon Board, the Board of Trustees, and more. He was very active in his children’s school activities, including sports, choir, orchestra, and field trips.  In recent years, he enjoyed spending time playing with and reading to his three grandchildren. He spent most of his leisure time researching his family history and the history of his home county, Lawrence County, Missouri. He spent his life serving the church, providing for and treasuring time with his family, and was truly a man of God.  We rejoice and are comforted in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father.
Ross is survived by his wife, Robin Cameron; children, James (Christina) Cameron, Carlee Cameron, and Christie Cameron; three grandchildren, James, Cassandra, and Archibald Cameron; brother, Paul (Carol) Cameron; sister, Susan (Richard) Lee; and several nieces and nephews (remembering one who is waiting to greet him in Heaven). He is preceded in death by his brother, Ken Cameron.
Visitation was at 10:00 a.m. and a Celebration of Life service was at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 10, at Calvary Road Baptist Church, 6811 Beulah St, Alexandria, VA. A private family interment will be held on a later date at Johns Chapel Cemetery, 2497 N Farm Rd 17, Ash Grove, MO 65604.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Sunday School Ministry of Calvary Road Baptist Church (www.crbc.org).
