Virgil “Wayne” Parris

Virgil “Wayne” Parris of Verona, formally of Broken Bow, Okla., passed away Aug. 8, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Ramona, Okla. on Sept. 3, 1944 to Vernon Parris and Lois (Hancock) Parris-Dawson. He was a 1963 graduate of Nowata High School. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country from 1966 to 1970. While being stationed in England he met and married his wife Rita (Barnett) Parris of Banbury, England.
He was employed by the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Broken Bow Powerhouse at Broken Bow Lake where he served as an electrician and later served as the Powerhouse Superintendent. He retired in 2003 after 33 years of service. While living in Broken Bow, Okla. he served as president of the Jaycees for several terms. He served as a youth baseball coach and youth basketball coach and as the director of both programs. He was one of the founding coaches of the Broken Bow Youth Football Association where he later became the director. He was also the director of the Red River Youth Football Association. He coached youth football for over 20 years. He later resumed coaching to coach his grandson after he moved to Monett, where he coached another 6 years with the Monett Mighty Mite Program.
He is survived by: his wife of Verona; son, Wayne (LaRisa) Parris of Andover, Kan.; son, Keith (Brandi) Parris of Monett; sister, Martha Lou Jackson of Springfield; brother, Donald (Sherry) Parris of Nowata, Okla.; and his six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his parents.
There will be no memorial services at this time. A private service will be held in Broken Bow, Okla. at a later date with close family and friends. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home in Monett.
