First regular season game for Mt’neers this Friday in Monett
The Mt’neers kicked off the 2019 football season by hosting the annual football jamboree at Mt’neer Stadium Friday, Aug. 23. The Mt’neers played host to three other teams: the Bolivar Liberators, the Neosho Wildcats and the McDonald County Mustangs.
During the jamboree, each team played a series of mini practice against the others, with each team getting a dozen offensive and defensive plays in each game.
Tom Cox, Mt’neer head football coach, said this was a chance for the team to try out certain plays to see how they would work against players from other teams.
“We had a script that we went off of, plays that I called, that are already pre-determined, regardless of what the result of the play before was,” he said. “It’s just things that we need to look at.”
Overall, Cox said he was happy with how the team performed at the jamboree.
“We play a lot of guys, and we run things that we need to work on against somebody else, and I thought we did very well on a lot of stuff,” he said. “(We’ve) still got some things that we need to clean up a little bit, but the things that our guys do is that they play hard. I couldn’t be happier with their effort, because they did a good job, effort-wise.”
The Mt’neers first game of the season will be Friday, Aug. 30, at Monett High School, where they will face the Cubs. The game begins at 7 p.m.
