John Lewis Carter, Jr.

John Lewis Carter Jr., 78, of Springfield, formerly of Mt. Vernon, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, at Cox South Hospital, in Springfield. He was born March 26, 1943, in Springfield,  the son of John Lewis and Christine Mrytle (Haynie) Carter Sr.
Carter was a 1961 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He retired from Tuthill Transport Technologies after 32 years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
On March 16, 1976, he married Reba Harris in Mt. Vernon. She preceded him in death on March 29, 2008.
Carter is survived by his son, Erik Carter (Theresa), of Augusta, Kan.; two daughters, Angie Reynaga (Aaron), of Anchorage, Ala. and Jennifer Carter of Springfield; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Cook of Omaha, Neb. and Deanna Mizer of Rogers, Ark.; one brother, Max Dawson (Jeannine), of Mt. Vernon.
Carter was preceded in death by his parents, John and Christine and his wife, Reba.
A visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with a funeral service held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, in the funeral home chapel. Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield.
