With Aurora’s loss to Nevada in the 2024 baseball sectional round, high school sports officially comes to an end for the 2023-2024 school year. However, award season is in full swing and Lawrence County is getting the recognition for a fantastic season.

District mania has come and gone on the baseball field and the battle for the Class 4 District 11 title was as exciting as you could imagine. Of course it didn’t hurt that it was an all-Lawrence County battle to decide it all.

The season has been a bit of a rollercoaster for the Mt. Vernon Mt’neers in coach Nick Swillum’s final go round, but it seems like they have saved their best baseball for the end of the season.

The defending state champion Lady Mt’neers will now just be known as the 2023 state champions as they fell in the district championship game to the No. 1 team in the state, Diamond, 5-3 Tuesday night.

Best two out of three? We will get the grudge match of the Mt. Vernon-Diamond battle for a district title and likely the state title. The two teams met in the district championship game for the first time in 2022 where the Lady Mt’neers fell 1-0 despite Harley Daniels throwing a no hitter.

The Lady Mt’neers have now won their last four softball games and have taken nine of their last 10 games with yet another strong week as the season is winding down for the defending state champions.

There is very little that can be said about the Lady Mt’neers that hasn’t already been stated, but the historic run continues with five more wins on the back of four double-digit run outputs.
