Longtime agriculture educator Steven Prewitt is no longer employed by the Mt. Vernon School District. His last day on the job was March 4, according to Mt. Vernon School District Superintendent Scott Cook. Cook, however, wasn’t able to give any details on Prewitt’s departure.

The Mt. Vernon High School Coquettes dance team competed at state on Saturday, Feb. 22. The squad brought home first place in the Division 1 Prop category for the second year in a row and third place out of eight teams competing in Division 1 Mix category.

After decades in business, the Mt. Vernon KFC restaurant, in joint operation with Long John Silver’s at 1101 East Mt. Vernon Boulevard, has permanently closed its doors. The last day open for the long-held franchise was Monday, March 17.

On Monday, Feb. 24, Monett High School senior Vayla Smith signed her national letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic track career as a Jennie at the University of Central Missouri. She plans to major in Psychology and hopes to one day become a Clinical Psychologist.
