A small fire that started in the women’s restroom of the historic Lawrence County Courthouse on the square in Mt. Vernon was extinguished within minutes of being reported on Monday, April 1.

The city of Mt. Vernon received a clean, or unmodified, opinion on its audit of 2018. Rebecca Friedrich, an auditor and certified public accountant with KPM CPAs and Advisors, of Springfield, delivered the report during the Mt. Vernon Board of Aldermen meeting on Tuesday, March 26.

Voters in Miller are being asked to pass a $3.3 million bond to pay for upgrades to the city’s aging sewer system. The city’s sewer system is out of compliance with DNR regulations, and the city has until 2020 to bring it into compliance.
